Visakhapatnam Tourist Places

Visakhapatnam is the fastest developing smart city in coastal Andhra Pradesh. It is famous for its natural beauty with Bay of Bengal sea in the East surrounded on three sides with hills / hillocks. The people here are very hospitable and friendly. It's a cool place with a good number of industries around which include Oil Refinery, Steel Plant, Hindustan Shipyard, BHPV (Bharat Heavey Plates and Vessels), Coromandal Fertilizers and many more.
Visakhapatnam is a well maintained smart city and is the headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command. Every year Navy Day is celebrated in December on the beach road in a grand way. Being a coastal city, there are many beautiful beaches in the city besides other interesting tourist places. There are many star hotels like Novotel and budget hotels in the city that offer good facilities for reasonable price.

Though, it is good to visit the city through out the year yet summers are sultry.

There are many interesting must-visit tourist attractions in Visakhapatnam. Some of these are:

Kailasagiri

Kailasagiri is one of the top attractions of the city and is one of the favorite hangouts of the locals. This is a small hillock adjoining Bay of Bengal and offers a spectacular view of the sea beneath.
The massive sculptures of Lord Shiva and Parvati in sitting posture is one of the main attractions of the place. The huge illuminated Vaishnavite symbols of Govinda Namalu i.e. Sankha, Chakra, Namam stand as an icon in the night time. There are many attractions on the hillock that include a circular train, Floral Clock, Children's Play zone etc.

There is a rope way to reach Kailasagiri from Appu Ghar, in cable cars. Every year the Horticulture Dept of Andhra Pradesh hosts a beautiful Floral Show for three continuous days. The show attracts huge crowd as the entire hillock is decorated with display of beautiful and colorful varieties of flowers. It's a real feast for the eyes to visit Kailasagiri during the Flower Show.

Tenneti Park

At the foot of Kailasagiri Hills, this is a beautiful small park facing the Bay of Bengal. It's a serene place where you can have good relaxation and peace of mind. The park is well maintained and there is ample place for sitting.

Kambalakonda Eco-tourism Park

Kambalakonda is a reserved forest located on the National Highway No. 5 almost opposite to Indira Zoological Park. This is one of the eco-tourism parks in Andhra Pradesh. It is surrounded by lush green hills of the Eastern Ghats. The eco-tourism centre is gradually becoming popular. There is much to do in this park besides relaxation in the lap of Mother Nature. Youth can have adventurous rides and trekking while children can have fun and play. Nature lovers can enjoy the bio-diversity of the nature and enjoy bird watch.

INS Kursura - the submarine museum

The submarine museum - INS Kursura - is one of its kind in the country. It is one of the best tourist attractions of the city. This submarine museum is located on the beach road. It was commissioned by Indian Navy in 1969 and was decommissioned in 2001. Later, in view of bringing Navy closer to the civilians, the decommissioned submarine was converted into a museum ship. In this unique submarine museum, people can have an on-board experience and get an insight into the weaponry.

Vizag, being a coastal city there is no dearth for beaches in the city. R.K Beach i.e Rama Krishna Beach near Rama Krsihna Matt, Rushikonda Beach, Yarada Beach and Appikonda Beach are some of the famous beaches of the city.

Matsya Darsini - The Aquarium

Matsya Darsini is on the beach road and is maintained by the municipal corporation. The aquarium has a good collection of fishes from different parts of the world. Children enjoy a visit to this place.

Kali Temple

Kali temple on the beach road is a near replica of the Dakshineswar temple in Kolkata. A nice place where you can meditate and relax for a while overseeing the sea.

Thotlakonda and Bavikonda Buddhist Complexes

The two ancient Buddhist pilgrimage sites of Thotlakonda and Bavikonda are at a distance of 15 Km from Visakhapatnam on the Vizag-Bhimli Beach Road. These ancient Buddhist sites date back to 3rd century - 2nd century BCE (Before Current Era).

Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi temple and Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple are the most famous temples of not only the city but of Andhra Pradesh.

Araku Valley and Borra Caves are the two most popular attractions of Visakhapatnam district.
