Deepavali is the Hindu festival of lights. It is a festival of joy and is enjoyed the most. There is much preparation well in advance for a joyous celebration of Diwali. Women folk in particular are fond of decorating their homes for celebrating the festival in the grandest way. They get involved in and keep themselves busy in making decorative diyas and thus showcase their talent.
Basically, people in Southern states light up oil lamps at the main entrance gate and in their balconies. Due to cultural assimilation, now there is a trend of decorating / lighting up home with decorative diyas.
Those who are interested in handmade items will be busy with the making of decorative diyas i.e earthen lamps. This is a good opportunity for the women to showcase their inherent talent of decorating diyas. This has even become a profession for the skillful / talented ones. They arrange exhibition-cum-sale of their hand made decorated diyas, This is a wonderful earning opportunity for the women in particular.
There are others who just enjoy making decorative diyas with no commercial interest. They just do it out of their own interest. During the process, some of the household wastes also can be reused in making decorative items.
Here are few of the old / used diyas to which I gave a new touch with paint and decoration. These look simple without much decoration.

Just light touch ups with acrylic paint and glitter glue.

And the below pics of decorated diyas is done by my 6 yrs old daughter.

The below pic of decorated diya is done by my daughter in the CCA class in her school.
