How to perform Venkateswara Swamy Deeparadhana at home

Tirumala, popularly known as Kaliyuga Vaikuntham, is the abode of Lord Venkateswara. A trip to Tirumala climbing the seven hills is something which is not only enjoyable and healthy but also considered sacred.

There are several ways of offering our prayers to Lord Venkateswara and Venkateswara Deeparadhana is one such pooja which is mostly performed by the people in the Southern states of India in particularly either by the groom's family before a wedding ceremony or by the newly wed couple after the marriage. However, this special pooja for Lord Venkateswara Swamy can be performed by anyone and at any time for the well being of the family.

7 Saturdays vratam is one of vratams for fulfilling various wishes. Find here the Telugu book on the same.

Procedure for Venkateswara Deeparadhana

You can perform this special pooja on Saturdays, Ekadasi day or any auspicious day. On this day, have a hair wash and dress up in a traditional way, preferably in yellow color silk sari. Decorate the Pooja Mandap / Mandir with yellow flowers (chrysanthemum - chamanti in Telugu) and mango leaves (not compulsory). Draw a picture of Venkateswara Namam with turmeric paste and vermilion (kumkuma) on the East wall near Pooja Mandapam.

Place the image of Lord Venkateswara in the mandap, if you have one, and decorate with yellow flower garland or yellow loose flowers. Prepare 'vadapappu', 'panakam' and 'chalimidi' for naivedyam. For 'vadapappu', you need to soak little split black gram i.e moong dal for few minutes and drain the water. If you want, you can add little sugar to this however it is not compulsory. For 'panakam', you need to take required quantity of water in a container or jar and add crushed jaggery (gur), crushed black pepper and cardamom (elaichi) powder and keep stirring till the jaggery dissolves. For 'chalimidi', you can take required quantity of rice flour and add powdered jaggery to it. Add cow's ghee to it and knead it to a dough of this rice flour and jaggery. If required add very little water to make a soft dough. You can add elaich powder for added flavor.

After making naivedyam, you need to make 'pindi jyoti' i.e rice flour lamp which is a must for this pooja. For making rice flour lamp, you need to add powdered jaggery and little cow's ghee to rice flour (quantity as per your requirement) and knead it to a hard dough. If you find it difficult to make lamp, you can add few drops of water to knead the dough. However, do not add too much water as the dough becomes thin and it will not stand to make a dough. So, make sure lamp can be easily made it the rice flour dough.

You have to make this 'pindi jyoti' (rice flour lamp), the way you do for Mangala Gowri Pooja. For the later, you have to make 5 lamps while for this pooja you make only one rice flour lamp. After making the lamp, place it in a shallow bowl or plate and place it in front of the Pooja Mandapam. Once you are done with your preparations, keep all the pooja items handy before you sit for performing the pooja. Note that you are not supposed to get up in the mid of pooja. You can also keep fruits like coconut and banana and dry fruits for offering.

Once everything is ready, you can light up the regular oil lamp in the pooja mandir which you use for regular pooja. And then keep the specially made rice flour lamp in front of the mandap, pour cow's ghee (not buffalo's ghee) in the lamp and place only one wick in it. Note that this lamp which you light up before you start performing pooja, should last till the end of the pooja. So, you need to keep observing the 'pindi jyoti' while you perform pooja and keep pouring cow's ghee as and when required.

When everything is set, light up the regular lamp, special rice flour lamp and also offer dhoopam i.e agarbatti. Offer prayers to Lord Venkateswara by recite Vishnu Sahasranamam (if you can - not compulsory) and also by reciting Venkateswara Namavali (108 or 1008 names of Lord Venkateswara). After you complete it, you can offer 'naivedyam' and then give 'mangala harati' i.e arati with camphor to the lord.

Take the prasad of Lord Venkateswara and also offer to family members and neighbors.  This is an effective pooja for the overall well-being of the family.

The rice flour jyoti has to be taken as prasadam. It can be distributed to the guests, neighbors and family members. If still left, it can be given to a cow but not supposed to be thrown in the trash.

Your query is not clear. What do you mean by saying 'for the 1st time'? There are seveal options for performing 'Venkateswara Swamy Pooja':

      1. You can place a photo pic / small metal idol of Venkateswara in the pooja mandap and perform pooja regularly by offering preferably yellow flowers (or the available ones), lighting up oil lamp, agarbathi (incense sticks) and then any 'naivedyam' like banana. You can recite 'Govinda Namalu' if you can.

      2. Or you can do the above mention 'Venkateswara Deeparadhana' as and when you feel like doing it. No hard and fast rule.

      3. Or observing fast on 9 or 11 Saturdays and then performing pooja with 'dhupa', 'deepa', 'naivedyam'.

It's upto your convenience. Doing with dedication / devotion is more important.
