CBSE Class 9 English Role Play - The Conquest of the English East India Company

In this English role play on the topic 'The Conquest of the English East India Company', few students talk 'for' the British Raj while some talk 'against' it.

Narrator: The enmity between the rulers of the neighbouring kingdoms peaked in India. The English East India Company took advantage of the situation and started taking control over many parts of India. Some kings took help from the British to suppress their neighbouring kingdoms. Now listen to what this prince of one such kingdom says:

Prince: Rajah Bah, call the English merchants. We need their help and weapons to win the battle with the neighbouring king and to buy musket for each and every soldier.

Narrator: However, there were some strong rulers like Tipu Sultan who fought bravely against the British.

Tipu Sultan: We should stop the export of sandalwood and all the spices. We should also not allow our local merchants to trade with the East India Company.

Narrator: The commoners were the worst sufferers. Most of the Indians raised their voices against the British rulers. But some of them supported their rule. Now listen to what one such supporter of British speaks.

Supporter of British Rule: It's the almighty who has sent the British to our country. Thank god! Now at least we have peace in our country. No more thugs and loots.

Narrator: Now listen to the one who opposed the British rule.

Opposer of British Rule: I agree that now there is peace but haven't you realised that we are now no more than their slaves? They are not born in this land yet they are ruling here. Do you know that they eat the flesh of cow which is sacred to us?

Narrator: Many early Indian rulers like Begum Hazrat Mahal and Jhansi Ki Rani Lakshmi Bai of the ninteenth century strongly rebelled. Now listen to the distress of Begum Hazrat and Rani Lakshmi Bai.

Begum: The British have seized the kingdom over which my ancestors ruled for years. They even took over my entire property.

Rani Lakshmi Bai: I won't let the British take away my kingdom. My son will be the successor of this kingdom and not the whites.

Narrator: The defeated and discontented Indian rulers joined the upsurge against the British. Many popular leaders like Moulvi Ahmedullah mobilized the Indians.

Moulvi: O! My brothers, fight alongside me against the whitemen. Don't you remember how they deceived us by making us put cows' and pigs' fat into our mouth? Let's fight together against these traitors.

Narrator: Many Indians were motivated by the brave leaders like Tatya Tope.

Tatya: Nana Saheb told me that he knows 'how to fight the British and yes we can and we will fight against them. Come on my dear countrymen! let's unitedly fight against the British rule and free our motherland from its clutches.

Narrator: The Indian Freedom Movement peaked. Kumar Singh, an eighty year old leader fought bravely against the British. Finally India achieved freedom on 15 August 1947 as a result of the sacrifice of many.

All the participant students: BHARAT MAATA KI JAI!
